There are four types of promotions. The first is the item promotion. This type of promotion allows you to choose which product it will apply to by going to the promotion section of an item and adding the promotion to the item. If not matched with coupon or membership promotions, this type of promotion will be available to everyone who selected a product linked with this promotion.

When clicking on new, a dropdown menu will appear showing the different kind of promotions you can offer such as the percentage of the items price, a monetary discount, buy one get one free and more.
After selecting the type of promotion you will be offering, you can then proceed to fill in the different fields. Once you are finished configuring all the options, click the create button. You will now be able to link the promotion to the products of your choice.
Now that your promotion has been create, you can now go and link your promotion to the item (i.e. camera or 4x6 print). Go to the edit section of the product and check the box next to the promotion name you've just created.
The next type of promotion you can create are cart promotions. Similarly to item promotions, if these are not associated with coupons or memberships, these will be available to all your customers.
However, the difference between item and cart promotions is that you will not be able to link any product to the cart promotion. Once the cart promotion is created and not associated with coupons or memberships, it will apply to everyone's cart no matter what they are ordering.
